...I keep doing these compulsively.

I THINK MY STYLE HAS CHANGED APPRECIABLY SINCE I FIRST SKETCHED THE ORIGINAL SEVEN which is weird because I... didn't really notice much. IDK, man. ANYWAY, I am posting this because I'm thinking of doing more of these and gradually phasing out most of the PB'd icons, mostly because I never found a PB that quite matched what I wanted, whereas with drawing I can make him as awkward and naked and curly and crazyfaced as I like.

HOWEVER.

1. His hawk icons are all pictures. I'm not changing this, since I can't draw hawks and also I love his current hawk set. so. IS THAT GOING TO BE WEIRD?
2. I'm kind of afraid I'll look at these in a year and hate them.
3. If I get rid of the old icons I'm probably going to be getting rid of a lot of the old keywords, too, because they. kind of sucked. but. :( threadbreakingggggg

...also, I'd say I have no time, but this is clearly a displacement activity for stress so. Uh. ... yyyyeahhhh.

ALSO ALSO

I WAS ALMOST POOPED ON BY A HAWK ON THE WAY HOME FROM CLASS TODAY I think it was a red-tailed hawk. It was fluffled up from the cold and it let me get astonishingly close without even doing that shifty staring thing wild raptors tend to do if you get within a certain radius of them. Its poo was really splashy and big. I am really glad it didn't actually hit me.

I need to do more pooing on people ICly. Clearly it is a sign from destiny.

ANIMATED ICON-MAKING

Okay so I figure I've done enough of randomly dumping unsolicited animated icons on people's heads. But I'm addicted to making animated icons. So the obvious solution, of course, is to do the icon-making meme. Except all with animated icons.

SO. LINK ME TO A YOUTUBE OR DIRECT DOWNLOAD VID (anything else I can't guarantee I'll be able to actually, you know, get at it), IDENTIFY WHAT YOU WANT ME TO ANIMATE (e.g. "ZIDANE'S WIGGLY BUTT"), and GIVE ME AN APPROXIMATE TIME IN THE VIDEO AT WHICH THE ACTION APPEARS. Request as many as you want; I'll be cherry-picking my way through whatever requests I get. I'll try to do one per requester first, and then maybe go through and do others.

Not going to be doing hand-drawn animations for this one, sorry, as those take too long >:

o/

This post has two purposes: self-reference, obviously, but also for permission for the people involved.

So Horus can be a bit of a stalker! And it's gotten to the point where I need to keep a list. Asterisked people I have gotten permission from; the others I'll work on talking to as I see them in IRC or something; if you see your characters listed here and I haven't gotten permission from you yet, though, c-can I get permission?

So. Roughly in order of most-stalked to least-stalked.

*Ronan--Ronan's Bast is a different Bast from Horus', and Horus knew this on some level, but Bast is Bast and Bast's people are Bast's people, which also makes them Horus' people. Therefore, Horus feels that Ronan is his responsibility.
Malik and Yami--self-explainatory, I think. ....have I gotten permission already, or. I don't remember 8(
*Ash Trine--actually, see here. Er. Light spoilers for American Gods, and not-so-light spoilers for God Eaters!
Kieran--yeah it's the demigod thing again. Also, Kieran feels faintly like home--both home as in Egypt, and home as in America. It's. Very mixed signals that Horus is getting, but.
Yuugi--by proxy to Yami 8D;;;;
Lina Inverse and *Will Stanton--nice people with scritches and suchlike. Horus watches them mostly for selfish reasons b>:

Also, he will, if it seems necessary, seek out people for help if any of the above seem to really really need it--and I do mean it when I say really; Horus is pretty good at leaving be and letting people sort out their own problems usually. But usually doesn't mean always. So, a list of people Horus would ping. Most of the people on the previous list are on this list. Again, asterisks mean permission has been obtained, and also again, if you're on this list and not asterisked--may I have permission?

...in no particular order, except for copypasta:

Ronan
*Ash Trine
Kieran
Lina Inverse
*Will Stanton
*Tim
*Ith (lolol playercest)

Additionally--people who are close to those he's stalking, but whom Horus himself does not necessarily know (or know all that well). Uh. I can deal with those on a case-by-case basis, though, since I don't necessarily know about all of them xD

At any rate! If you're on either of these lists and not asterisked--may I have your permission? Or, if you're not on these lists and think you should be. Um. Tell me? :D;;;;

People on either list--if you feel like you need an IC reason for an intervention on behalf of the people on the first list, feel free to ping me! I can throw Horus in to be awkward and 8DDDD about it.

THE EGYPTIAN CONSPIRACY: or, Why Horus Isn't Actually a Lone Nut After All

Right. So. First time through reading American Gods, unless you've had some kind of forewarning or are extremely extremely observant, especially in regards to fine details--Horus' appearance and subsequent Sudden Godmode (ahaha) is TOTALLY OUT OF THE BLUE.

However, my opinion is that there's stuff that suggests otherwise--that, like Loki and Wednesday's orchestrated war of gods, everything that went wrong with that scheme was orchestrated as well.

From the Cairo bit onwards, there's random passing mentions of hawks being spotted every now and then, which suggests, since Neil Gaiman is a devious little minx, that Horus has been tailing Shadow. Sure enough, when Shadow meets Horus in person for the first time during the vigil, Horus says a whole lot of random shit, but also something that pretty much confirms this: "I know you. I watched you in Cairo. I watched you after. My sister likes you." Because Horus is a random crazy, one is most likely inclined to dismiss the third of these sentences as unrelated, and assume that he's been following Shadow just because he's weird and felt like it. But back during the Audrey Burton incident, Bast tells Shadow, "I got eyes wherever my folk walk." And again, after Shadow dies--"my people have been keeping their eyes on you, for me."

And there's another thing--Horus notices Shadow is on the verge of death, but all he does is say, "you are dying. Aren't you?" before flying off. And then Shadow dies--and meets Zorya Polunochnaya (on the topic of whose involvement I reserve judgment for now, because I don't trust Gaiman and haven't gone over the Russian bits in as much detail as the Egypt bits yet) before meeting Bast--who he allows to chose a path for him. After that, it's the Egyptian crew who takes care of his after-death niceties--in particular, Thoth tells him, "I requested that I be the one to come for you", doesn't give Shadow a straight answer when he asks why, and then says "It doesn't matter that you didn't believe in us. We believed in you." And then the weighing happens, after which Bast tells Shadow, "I had hoped that you would do some good, in the current troubles." (And in the subsequent pre-battle scene, one notes the absence of any Egyptian gods. Or the Russian crew, come to that--but like I said, I need more information to figure out that bit.)

And then Horus goes to find Easter so they can revive Shadow--"If he is gone forever, it is all over." And Shadow figures it out and fixes everything and it's all over etc.

Now, I still need to do another reread to figure out some things--such as the involvement of the Russians and the Americans, where Mr. Nancy actually stood on all this, etc.--but still. I think? There's something going on here, and there's more to be said, plot-wise, at least on the matter of the Egyptians. I think Bast is up to something. I think Horus and Thoth are in on it, and probably Anubis, too. I think the Russians might be involved somehow, and possibly the Norns, and maybe Johnny Appleseed and Wisakedjak, too. But this is something I like about Neil Gaiman--at the end, there is the big reveal of This Is What Happened, but there's also a bunch of other stuff that isn't made entirely explicit either, and a lot of it seems pretty damn important, but you have to go through and pick up the bits to piece it together anyway.

At any rate, this is all basically just a sketch of the relevant issues, but I think, in light of all this, Horus' actions seem a bit less random and inconsistent, no?

L-lol I thought I'd just. Make a collective like this.
ABOUT THOSE POWERS.

'Kay, so. Gods have certain powers in AGverse, and this will affect how Horus plays with other characters. The last paragraph of this post describes the abilities in question, but I'll summarize them here:

For other gods/mythical creatures/folk heroes/etc: AG gods are able to pick out others of their kind and, arguably, certain things about their powers/aspects/etc. without having to ask. HOW MUCH SHOULD HORUS BE ABLE TO AUTOMATICALLY KNOW ABOUT YOU? Specifically, in regards to being in/from mythology, legends, beliefs, etc. Or. May he be able to do this to your character in camp? If he can't, we can just blame alternate world incompatibility, so it's no big if you're not comfortable with it |D

For characters who aren't myffic: AG gods can pick your brain and also make you do/think/want things you normally wouldn't WITHOUT NOTICING. As you can probably tell, this is a bit of a (aha) godmode-y ability. THEREFORE. The make-you-do-stuff I will ask directly if there ever comes a situation where Horus would want to use it, and I will try to avoid letting those come up. And I will try to adhere to the note-to-psychics stuff in the permissions meme when it comes to brainpicking. BUT IF YOU WANT TO TELL ME HERE ANYWAY, IT'D BE NICE 'cause then it'd all be in one place |D

ETA: FOR THE GODNESS POLL it's more about what's believed than about specific powers. So, if a character is SUPAR MAGICAL but in a way that has nothing to do with any mythologies at all, then they won't ping as anything but a normal human. If your character has no supernatural powers WHATSOEVER but is still based on some dude from a legend or folk myth, then they're likely still gonna ping. It's uh yeah XD

GODS AND STUFF

A BIT OF BACKGROUND, in the form of a long ramble because I can't write these things in an organized fashion to save my life:

The gods of American Gods are of the sort where they come from the dreams of humanity--in other words, human belief is what brings gods into being. So long as they are believed in, the gods survive; but they must also be true to what is believed about them. It seems that when gods find themselves totally without believers, their nature starts to deteriorate; after this, it is easy for them to die for good by forsaking the core of what was once believed about them. There are at least two or three canonical examples of this.

Gods can be killed in more conventional manners as well; they can revive totally unscathed, but this is a lot less likely if they don't have believers. All of a god's power comes from belief. So, in AGverse, Jesus could revive himself without batting an eye in America; Horus, on the other hand, would have a lot more trouble.

All gods have a few abilities in common:

All gods are connected to and able to, at any time, enter "backstage". Backstage is basically the mythical undercurrent in any given place. In the human world, gods tend to be bound to the laws of reality to some degree most of the time, although they can do things that humans believe or believed that they are able to do. Backstage, on the other hand, they are fully what humans believe them to be, no matter how few believers they have left. (For an example, in the real world, Selene would just be some chick with weird powers that have something to do with the moon, but backstage, she is the moon--and so is every moon goddesses that was ever believed in, but there is no real interference from this apparent contradiction.) This often means that they'll appear as many, many different things all at once. In Horus' case, he'd appear a falcon-headed man, a pharaoh, a full bird, and a small boy sitting on a lotus, to name a few. (This isn't shown in canon, but it can be inferred from what was actually believed about Horus in ancient Egypt.)

Gods can affect people and events in a very low-key sort of way that's more akin to a very intense charisma than any kind of actual conscious power. If a god stays in a small area for a very long time, that place starts to bend to their nature, whether or not they're putting an effort into it (though if they do put an effort into it, then the effect is much more pronounced and controlled than otherwise). On a smaller scale, gods can cause humans to want to do, think, or say things they otherwise would not, without said humans knowing why or even questioning it. They can also draw information from humans, but not in the "reading minds" sort of way. To my recollection, they're never shown to actually know what someone is thinking at a specific moment, but they can find out little things, like names and such, if they are willing to put in a bit of effort. Gods' ability to read other gods is a bit more inherent: if two gods bump into each other, randomly, on a street, then they will each be able to know who the other one is without even asking.

PERMISSIONS/STATS

Age: Looks like a teen or a young man, but is actually REALLY OLD. This particular self of Horus has been in America for three thousand years.
Height: not that tall.
Weight: not that heavy.
Eyes: NOT CANONLY STATED! Probably dark. AG gods tend to look like, you know. Normal humans.
Hair: Dark and very very curly~

Physical traits: Usually naked! Also, looks exactly as crazy as he actually is. I cannot stress this enough. AT A GLANCE, HE LOOKS TOTALLY INSANE. YOU WOULD NOT EXPECT HIM TO BE WITH THE SENSE-MAKING, HAVING JUST MET HIM.

As a bird of prey, he has canonically ambiguous species--something generic looking, probably the size of a small hawk or a large falcon, and likely some drab, generic-looking markings--one character in canon thinks he's a redtail, for an example.

Medical Info: Uh, probably not all that healthy. He eats roadkill, come on. Also, he canonly has dark urine! (lol.)

What's Okay To Mention Around Him/Her: ANYTHING AT ALL \o/

Notes for the Psychics: IS A GOD and feel free to pick up on this in as much detail as you wish but that actually doesn't make him THAT much different from normal humans in AGverse. Is utterly bugfuck crazy, though.

ETA 2/20/08 for detail: due to the crazy his mental activity is rather chaotic at best--instincts, impulses, and broken fragments of thoughts spiking off in conflicting directions, usually. It's probably very headache-inducing if you try to analyze it in any detail. His actions are dictated primarily by the general trend: typically, this means that it's instincts that win out--instincts are simpler, and thus easier to maintain, harder to fight, hence his tendency to trend towards a more animalistic mode of behavior. Sometimes a single coherent thought becomes strong enough that it overrides this general trend, however--but it's a struggle for him to maintain that thought, because it has to fight with habit as well as instinct. Because of this, he often appears even more instable when he is in fact closer to sanity.

ALSO. In bird form, when he talks to you, his "speech" is in action tags--this is because that is what he's saying, but not in so many words. It's a lot closer to body language or pure meaning than it is to any form of syntactical language. If that makes any sense at all uh. He can talk normally in bird-form, it's just he usually doesn't remember that he can.

Abilities: UH the most relevant one is that he can transform into some kind of bird of prey \o/ The specific species of the raptor is canonically ambiguous. He's been taken for a red-tailed hawk, though, which is... sort of a generic-looking hawk \o/ Other than that, he has sun-related powers! Canon doesn't explore this very thoroughly, but we do know that he can affect the weather. Also, he has the standard god-abilities from AG (which may be found here).

Shapeshift/bodyswap/grievous injury/death etc.: ask first ♥

Cooking: PROBABLY NOT ♥

Character: Horus
Series: American Gods
Character age: N/A (appears mid- to late teens)
Canon: In Horus' canon, every god that is imagined and believed in, exists. And every god that has ever been imagined and believed in, and then abandoned... still exists. They may be sitting next to you in an airplane, or washing your car, or soliciting you on street corners.

Or, they could be cavorting around buck naked and eating roadkill, like Horus.

Horus was once the ancient Egyptian god of the sun. Now, after spending some three-and-a-half thousand years stuck in hostile Middle America, Horus is--in the words of a contemporary--bugfuck crazy. Horus spends almost all his time as a hawk, and when he isn't a hawk, he's a naked young man who speaks in an oddly stilted manner, seems to have memory and/or attention span issues, and still eats roadkill.

On the other hand, Horus, as alien as he seems at a glance, does have some significant depths to him, and is able to interact with others on more levels than just okay-yeah-this-guy's-a-headcase. There were some concerns over sustainability the last time I tried apping Horus, and there was a mini-essay on the topic, but here I'll just summarize its contents thusly: He has emotions and motivations. He has a sense of right and wrong. Canon has portrayed him with all the psychological complexities and all the banal and exotic components of humanity that are needed to form lasting interpersonal relationships; whether or not this is enough, I'll leave for you to judge.

Sample Post:
Brother, sun-brother who is not my brother, where have you gone? I am not where he has been, I think, and I cannot sense him any more. Am I still in America? I must be. It is an unholy place. This place is very unholy. I can feel it pressing against me, like darkness or a plague.

It itches.

Or perhaps it is simply the brambles upon which I sit that itch. Unholiness and poisoned oak. That is America. Unholy poisoned oak and hunger. I am hungry still. They gave me a gun, they did, though who it was that did, I cannot say. A gun. Guns are useless to me. I can banish the clouds from the sky; I can coax the dawn into day; I can call the sun from down the heavens, if I so wish. I can, still, even now. My mother taught me. But she did not teach me to use a gun, so I do not know how to do that. Elsewhere, the Americans lay down offerings on their roads, with their big noisy motor chariots. Offerings to no one, and free for the taking.

There are no offerings here, and the small things are difficult to kill. I have tried to take a squirrel or two, but they have banded against me and are now staging a communist uprising.

I do not know much about communists, except that they are from Russia, where parties can always find you, and that they are red and they scream about "THE JULY REVOLUTION!!!11ONEDYELEVEN" and all rush in to hurt you when you try to eat them. The toucans are aiding them, also. The gorillas have offered to help me quell the uprising, but I confess I do not know much about gorilla warfare. I simply wish for a meal. I do not care if dominoes fall and infect the zombies with communists. They will not feel the teeth and claws and beaks anyway, seeing as they are zombies.

I am going to go find something else to eat.

VOATINS
